NEW DELHI: India is becoming less dependent on foreign capital. This, as the share of domestic institutional investors (DIIs) along with retail and high net-worth individual (HNI) investors in companies listed on NSE has crossed the 25% mark for the first time ever in March quarter.The share of domestic investors in ownership of listed companies reached yet another all-time high of 25.72% as on March 31, 2023, from 24.44% in the December quarter, shows data from PRIME Database."This was the sixth consecutive quarter where their combined share has increased, breaching the 25% or one-fourth mark for the first time in the process, and showcases the steadfast march of the Indian capital market towards Aatmanirbharta. Net inflows from DIIs stood at Rs 83,200 crore during the quarter," said Pranav Haldea, Managing Director, PRIME Database.In value terms, DII holding reached Rs 41.24 lakh crore, a decrease of 2.47% over the last quarter, while FII holding also reduced 7.18% to Rs 51.85 lakh crore.Meanwhile, despite net outflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) of Rs 26,211 crore during the quarter, FII share increased marginally to 20.56% in March quarter, up by 32 bps from 20.24% in Q3. FIIs pulled out Rs 35,048 crore from oil, gas & consumable fuels and financial services sectors during the quarter while investing Rs 12,994 crore in services and capital goods sector.In the last 8 years, a structural shift has been taking place in relation to ownership on Dalal Street. At the end of FY 2015, FII share was 23.30% while the combined share of DII, retail and HNI was just 18.47%.In the March quarter, the gap between FII and DII holding decreased to its lowest level ever — DII holding now being just 20.46% lower than FII holding. The share of DIIs as a whole also increased to an all-time high of 16.35%, retail investors' share also increased to an all-time high of 7.48%.The share of private promoters in companies listed on the NSE decreased to a 3-year low of 41.97% as of March-end from 43.25% on December-end.PRIME Database shows there were 18 companies in which trinity of promoters FIIs and DIIs all increased their stake during the quarter — Bajaj Holdings & Investment, Shriram Finance, Deepak Nitrite, Natco Pharma, NCC, Eclerx Services, Jindal Saw, Anant Raj, Hikal, Dhanuka Agritech, Jai Corp, PSP Projects, IOL Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, Barbeque-Nation Hospitality, Cosmo First, RPG Life Sciences, Pix Transmissions and Linc.
