CSB Bank Ltd's latest results show strong growth in net interest income but a significant decline in net profit due to increased provisioning and rising non-performing assets, raising concerns about asset quality and deposit stability. Overall, while core income metrics are strong, the bank faces challenges that may affect its future performance.
CSB Bank Ltd's latest financial results for Q1 FY27 present a mixed operational picture. The bank achieved a record net interest income (NII) of ₹478.66 crores, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 26.16%. This growth was driven by a notable increase in interest earned, which rose to ₹1,287.32 crores, supported by advances growth and improved yields. However, the quarter also saw a decline in net profit to ₹150.04 crores, which represents a significant sequential decrease of 25.57%. This decline was primarily influenced by elevated provisioning requirements, which more than doubled compared to the previous quarter, as well as a sharp contraction in non-interest income.
The bank's gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio increased to 1.75%, up from 1.66% in the previous quarter, indicating a reversal of the improving trend in asset quality observed in prior periods. This uptick in the GNPA ratio raises concerns about potential stress in certain loan segments as the bank pursues aggressive growth in its advances portfolio. Despite this, the net NPA ratio showed a slight improvement, indicating that the bank's provisioning coverage remains robust. In terms of deposit franchise, the current account savings account (CASA) ratio declined for the fifth consecutive quarter to 19.41%, reflecting ongoing challenges in maintaining low-cost deposits amidst competitive pressures. This decline in CASA has implications for the bank's net interest margins, which compressed by 17 basis points to 3.66%. Overall, CSB Bank's financial performance highlights strong growth in core income metrics but is overshadowed by concerns regarding asset quality and the stability of its deposit base. The company saw an adjustment in its evaluation, reflecting the market's cautious stance on its near-term prospects. Moving forward, the bank's ability to stabilize asset quality and rebuild investor confidence will be critical in determining its operational trajectory.
