Sensex and Nifty Trends

The benchmark Sensex opened the day flat, initially inching up by 72.54 points, before accelerating to a peak gain of 400.25 points during the session. It ultimately settled at 76,976.39, marking a 0.62% increase. The Nifty followed a similar trajectory, buoyed by large-cap stocks that led the market higher. Notably, the Sensex is trading comfortably above its 50-day moving average (DMA), signalling short-term bullish momentum, although the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, indicating that the longer-term trend has yet to fully confirm a sustained uptrend.

Sectoral Performance: Media Shines, IT Faces Headwinds

Out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, 34 advanced while only 4 declined, reflecting broad market participation. The Nifty Media sector emerged as the top performer, surging 2.00% on the back of strong buying interest in marquee media stocks. Conversely, the BSE IT sector was the laggard, slipping 0.51% amid profit-taking and cautious outlooks from some large-cap IT firms. The pharmaceutical sector also faced pressure, with Dr Reddy's Laboratories falling 4.36%, contributing to the sector’s subdued performance.

Large, Mid and Small Cap Movers

Large-cap stocks traded largely flat, with the exception of Dixon Technologies, which gained a notable 4.86%, supported by robust earnings expectations and positive industry trends. Mid-cap stocks outperformed, led by Kalyan Jewellers, which soared 14.59% following renewed investor interest and favourable market sentiment. Among small caps, C.E. Info System advanced 5.96%, reflecting strong momentum in select niche players.

On the downside, Page Industries was the top mid-cap loser, declining 3.96%, while JSW Dulux dropped 3.46% among small caps. Solar Industries also saw a sharp 4.34% fall, adding to the list of notable decliners.

Market Breadth and Indices

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE 500 index was a healthy 4.31x, with 405 stocks advancing against 94 declining. This breadth underscores the broad-based nature of the rally. The S&P BSE 250 Midcap Index rose 1.25%, while the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap Index gained 1.47%, outperforming the BSE 100, which increased 0.61%. These gains highlight the ongoing appetite for mid and small-cap stocks amid a generally positive market environment.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Investor Activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) maintained a cautious stance, with marginal net buying observed in select sectors, particularly in large caps and consumer discretionary stocks. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued to support the market with steady inflows, especially in mid and small-cap segments, which helped sustain the rally. This balanced participation between FIIs and DIIs contributed to the market’s resilience amid mixed global cues.

Global Cues and Outlook

Global markets showed mixed trends, with US indices consolidating after recent gains and European markets trading cautiously ahead of key economic data releases. Asian markets were broadly positive, providing some tailwind to Indian equities. However, investors remain watchful of inflationary pressures and central bank policies worldwide, which could influence market direction in the near term.

Upcoming Corporate Earnings

Market participants are gearing up for a busy earnings week, with key results expected from L&T Finance Ltd, Bank of Maharashtra, and Indian Bank on 10 July 2026. These results will be closely monitored for insights into credit growth, asset quality, and profitability trends in the financial sector, which could set the tone for broader market sentiment.

Investor Takeaway

Today’s market action reflects a cautiously optimistic mood among investors, with broad sectoral participation and strong mid and small-cap performance offsetting pockets of weakness in IT and pharma. The healthy advance-decline ratio and sustained buying by domestic institutions provide a positive backdrop, although the mixed global environment and upcoming earnings announcements warrant a measured approach.

Investors should continue to monitor technical indicators such as the 50DMA and 200DMA crossovers for confirmation of sustained trends, while keeping an eye on sector-specific developments and global macroeconomic factors. Selective stock picking, favouring companies with robust fundamentals and positive earnings momentum, remains advisable in the current environment.
