Sensex Advances 0.85% as IT Sector Leads Gains; Mid and Small Caps Show Strength

Sensex and Nifty Performance

The BSE Sensex opened at 78,883.34, surging 788.70 points (1.01%) in early trade before settling with a gain of 664.19 points or 0.85%. The benchmark index remains comfortably above its 50-day moving average (DMA), signalling sustained short-term strength, although the 50DMA continues to trade below the 200DMA, indicating a longer-term consolidation phase. The Nifty mirrored this positive momentum, supported by broad sectoral participation.

Sectoral Trends: IT Leads, Media Lags

Out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, 35 advanced while only three declined, underscoring the widespread nature of the rally. The BSE IT sector emerged as the top gainer, climbing 2.48%, buoyed by strong buying interest in software and technology stocks. Conversely, the Nifty Media sector was the sole significant laggard, falling 2.91%, dragged down by sharp losses in key media companies.

Mid and Small Caps Show Resilience

Mid and small cap indices outperformed the broader market, with the S&P BSE SmallCap Index rising 1.42%, the BSE 100 Caps up 0.92%, and the S&P BSE 150 MidCap Index gaining 0.89%. Several indices, including the S&P BSE MidCap Select, SmallCap Select, and Nifty Next 50, hit fresh 52-week highs, reflecting strong underlying momentum in these segments. Mid caps traded largely flat overall, but selective stocks showed notable gains.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among large caps, L&T (Larsen & Toubro) led the charge with a robust 7.80% gain, reflecting renewed investor confidence in infrastructure and engineering sectors. Jubilant FoodWorks was the top mid cap gainer, rising 6.86%, while Urban Company outperformed all with a remarkable 13.07% surge in the small cap space.

On the downside, GAIL (India) was the largest large cap loser, declining 4.08%, weighed down by concerns over margin pressures. Thermax slipped 4.47% among mid caps, and Zee Entertainment plummeted 14.81%, marking the steepest fall in the small cap category amid sectoral weakness in media.

Other notable BSE500 gainers included Pine Labs (+9.75%) and Aegis Logistics (+8.83%), while Muthoot Finance (-7.54%) and Latent View (-6.03%) were among the significant decliners.

Market Breadth and Investor Activity

The market breadth was strongly positive, with 398 advances against 102 declines on the BSE500, yielding an advance-decline ratio of 3.9x. This robust breadth confirms broad-based buying interest rather than a narrow rally. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) remained active participants, although detailed net flows were mixed amid cautious global cues.

Global Cues and Outlook

Global markets showed a mixed picture, with US indices consolidating after recent gains and Asian markets trading cautiously ahead of key economic data releases. The Indian market’s resilience in this environment highlights strong domestic fundamentals and investor appetite for quality stocks. The upcoming quarterly results season, with heavyweight companies such as Bharti Airtel, ONGC, and Pidilite Industries scheduled to report on 4 August 2026, is expected to provide further direction.

Technical Observations

Technically, the Sensex’s ability to sustain above the 50DMA is a positive sign, although the 50DMA remaining below the 200DMA suggests the market is still in a medium-term consolidation phase. Large caps are currently leading the market, supported by strong sectoral performances, particularly in IT and infrastructure-related stocks. Investors should watch for confirmation of trend continuation in the coming sessions.

Investor Takeaway

Today’s market action reflects a healthy risk-on sentiment with broad participation across sectors and market capitalisations. The IT sector’s leadership and the strong performance of mid and small caps suggest investors are favouring growth-oriented themes. However, pockets of weakness in media and select large caps like GAIL indicate that caution remains warranted in certain segments.

With key corporate earnings due imminently, investors should monitor results closely for signs of margin expansion or contraction, revenue growth, and management commentary on demand conditions. The technical setup supports a cautiously optimistic stance, favouring quality large caps and select mid and small caps with strong fundamentals and growth prospects.

Overall, the market’s resilience amid mixed global cues and strong domestic breadth bodes well for sustained momentum in the near term, provided global uncertainties do not escalate.
