Sensex Advances 660 Points as All Sectors Rally; Media Leads Gains

Sensex and Nifty Performance Overview

After opening 558.77 points higher, the Sensex maintained its upward momentum throughout the session, closing firmly above its 50-day moving average (DMA). However, the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, signalling that while short-term momentum is positive, the longer-term trend requires further confirmation. The Nifty followed a similar trajectory, buoyed by gains in large-cap stocks and sectoral strength.

Large caps led the charge, with the Sensex’s 0.86% gain outpacing mid and small caps, which rose 0.76% and 0.75% respectively, as measured by the S&P BSE 100 and S&P BSE 250 SmallCap indices. The S&P BSE 150 MidCap index also advanced 0.82%, reflecting broad participation across market capitalisation segments.

Sectoral Leaders and Market Breadth

Remarkably, all 38 sectors tracked on the BSE advanced, an uncommon display of uniform strength. The NIFTY Media sector emerged as the top performer, surging 2.20%, driven by strong gains in marquee media stocks. This sector’s outperformance was a key catalyst for the broader market rally.

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 index stood at a robust 2.87x, with 370 stocks advancing against 129 declining. This healthy breadth underscores the widespread buying interest and investor confidence prevailing in the market.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among the BSE500 constituents, Balrampur Chini led the pack with an impressive 12.84% surge, followed by Netweb Technologies and Zee Entertainment, which gained 6.79% and 6.20% respectively. These stocks benefited from sector-specific tailwinds and positive investor sentiment.

On the downside, Aster DM Quality declined 3.07%, while C P C L and Power Finance Corporation fell 2.87% and 2.54% respectively. Notably, Power Finance Corporation was the top large-cap loser, while REC Ltd led mid-cap declines with a 2.13% drop. Small caps traded largely flat, with Aster DM Quality being the most notable decliner in that segment.

Within market capitalisation categories, Coforge was the top large-cap gainer, rising 3.02%, while Multi Commodity Exchange (Multi Comm. Exc.) led mid-caps with a 4.81% gain. Balrampur Chini’s sharp rally made it the standout small-cap performer.

FII and DII Activity and Global Cues

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued to play a pivotal role in shaping market direction. While detailed net inflow/outflow data is not disclosed today, the broad-based sectoral gains and strong market breadth suggest sustained buying interest from both categories.

Globally, markets were buoyed by positive economic data and easing geopolitical tensions, which supported risk appetite among investors. The Indian market’s outperformance relative to some global peers reflects its resilience and the attractiveness of domestic growth prospects.

Technical Indicators and Market Outlook

The Sensex’s close above the 50DMA is a positive technical signal, indicating short-term strength. However, the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, suggesting that investors should watch for confirmation of a sustained uptrend. The strong advance-decline ratio and sectoral breadth provide further confidence in the market’s current momentum.

Investors may consider focusing on sectors demonstrating leadership, such as media and select large caps, while monitoring laggards for potential turnaround opportunities. The mid and small cap segments, though advancing, showed more measured gains, signalling selective stock picking remains prudent.
