Sensex Advances Nearly 1% Led by Large Caps; IT Sector Tops Gains Amid Broad Market Rally

Sensex and Nifty Performance Overview

The benchmark Sensex opened the day 657.85 points higher and maintained its upward momentum throughout the session, closing near its intraday highs. The index’s current level of 77,482.18 marks a significant recovery, supported by strong buying interest in heavyweight constituents. Meanwhile, the Nifty also mirrored this strength, buoyed by sectoral leaders and broad market participation.

Technically, the Sensex is trading comfortably above its 50-day moving average (DMA), signalling short-term bullishness. However, the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, indicating that the medium-term trend is still in a consolidation phase. Investors will be watching closely for a sustained breakout above the 200DMA to confirm a longer-term uptrend.

Sectoral Trends: IT and Pharma Shine Bright

Out of 38 sectors tracked, 31 advanced while only 7 declined, reflecting broad market strength. The NIFTY IT sector led the charge with a robust gain of 2.76%, driven by strong performances from key technology stocks. The pharmaceutical sector also impressed, with the NIFTY Pharma index hitting a new 52-week high, supported by positive earnings outlooks and increased investor interest in healthcare amid ongoing global health concerns.

Consumer durables and midcap indices also touched fresh 52-week highs, underscoring the market’s appetite for growth-oriented sectors. Conversely, the Realty sector lagged, declining by 0.90%, weighed down by profit-booking and cautious sentiment ahead of upcoming corporate results.

Market Breadth and Capitalisation Trends

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 was a healthy 3.31x, with 381 stocks advancing against 115 declining. This strong breadth confirms the underlying strength of the rally and reduces concerns of a narrow market advance. Large caps led the gains with the Sensex rising 0.93%, while the BSE100 large cap index gained 0.8%. Midcaps and small caps also participated, albeit with more modest gains of 0.58% and 0.78% respectively.

Among midcaps, the S&P BSE MidCap Select Index traded flat, indicating some consolidation after recent gains. Small caps showed resilience, with the S&P BSE 250 SmallCap Index rising 0.78%, supported by select high-growth stocks.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

The BSE500 index saw notable winners and laggards today. Newgen Software led the pack with a sharp 9.50% gain, followed closely by Paradeep Phosphates at 9.48% and Firstsource Solutions at 7.67%. These stocks benefited from sector-specific tailwinds and positive earnings revisions.

On the downside, Phoenix Mills was the top loser, falling 5.94%, reflecting profit-booking in the realty space. City Union Bank and Sumitomo Chemical also declined by 3.48% and 3.18% respectively, weighed down by sector-specific concerns and profit-taking.

Focusing on market capitalisation segments, Coforge emerged as the top large cap gainer with a 4.48% rise, while Swiggy led midcaps with a 5.24% advance. Among small caps, Newgen Software’s 9.50% surge was the highlight. Conversely, Samvardhana Motherson was the largest large cap loser, down 2.47%, while Phoenix Mills and City Union Bank topped the mid and small cap decliners respectively.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Institutional Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) remained active participants in the market. While detailed net inflow/outflow figures are yet to be disclosed, the overall market strength suggests continued buying interest from DIIs, which has been a key driver of the recent rally. FIIs have shown a cautious stance amid global uncertainties but have not significantly curtailed their participation, providing a balanced support to the market.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets provided a supportive backdrop for the Indian indices. Positive economic data from the US and Europe, coupled with easing geopolitical tensions, boosted investor sentiment worldwide. Asian markets broadly advanced, with key indices in Japan and South Korea posting gains. Crude oil prices remained stable, alleviating inflation concerns and supporting market optimism.

These global factors, combined with strong domestic fundamentals, helped sustain the upward momentum in Indian equities, particularly in sectors sensitive to global demand such as IT and Pharma.

Upcoming Corporate Earnings to Watch

Investor focus will soon shift to key corporate earnings scheduled for 30 Jul 2026. Tata Steel, Vedanta, and Torrent Pharma are set to announce their quarterly results. These companies operate in sectors that have shown mixed trends recently, and their performance will be closely analysed for guidance on sectoral momentum and broader economic conditions.

Strong earnings from these companies could further bolster market sentiment, especially if they beat expectations or provide optimistic outlooks. Conversely, any disappointments may temper the current bullishness, particularly in the metals and pharma sectors.

Conclusion: Market Outlook and Investor Takeaways

The Indian equity market’s near 1% gain on 29 Jul 2026 reflects a healthy risk-on sentiment supported by sectoral leadership from IT and Pharma, broad market participation, and positive global cues. The strong advance-decline ratio and fresh 52-week highs in multiple indices underscore the market’s underlying strength.

However, investors should remain cautious given the mixed technical signals and pockets of weakness in sectors like Realty. Upcoming earnings announcements will be critical in shaping near-term trends. Overall, the market appears poised for further gains, favouring large caps and quality midcaps with sustainable growth prospects.

Active monitoring of institutional flows and global developments remains essential for navigating the evolving market landscape.
