Indian equity markets witnessed a sharp correction on 24 Sep 2026, with the Sensex plunging 1.67% and the Nifty shedding 1.64%, reflecting widespread selling pressure across sectors. While the IT sector bucked the trend with notable gains, financial stocks bore the brunt of the decline, dragging the broader market lower amid subdued global cues and cautious investor sentiment.
Sensex and Nifty Slip Sharply as Market Breadth Weakens; IT Sector Offers Rare Relief

Market Indices and Overall Trend

The BSE Sensex closed at 73,580.54, down 1,247.71 points, marking a significant intraday loss of 1.67%. Similarly, the Nifty 50 index ended the session at 23,063.10, retreating 383.7 points or 1.64%. This decline extends the Nifty’s recent downtrend, with the index now 3.82% above its 52-week low of 22,182.55. Technical indicators remain bearish as the Nifty trades below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, signalling sustained downward momentum.

Over the past three weeks, the Nifty has lost 3.49%, underscoring the persistent selling pressure. Midcap stocks have been particularly weak, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index falling 2.25% today, exacerbating the market’s overall decline.

Sectoral Performance: IT Shines Amid Financial Sector Weakness

Out of 38 sectors tracked, only three managed to close in positive territory, while 35 sectors declined. The BSE IT sector was the top gainer, surging 2.96%, supported by strong performances in select large-cap IT stocks. This sector’s resilience provided a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak market landscape.

Conversely, the Nifty Finance sector was the worst performer, plunging 2.39%. Financial stocks, including lenders and NBFCs, faced heavy selling, reflecting investor concerns over credit growth and asset quality amid tightening liquidity conditions. The BSE Finance index’s sharp fall weighed heavily on the broader indices.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among large caps, ICICI Lombard emerged as the top gainer, rallying 4.68% on robust quarterly results and positive outlook commentary. In the midcap space, United Breweries advanced 2.56%, buoyed by steady demand trends in the beverages segment. The small-cap segment saw Allied Blenders shine with an impressive 8.47% gain, reflecting renewed investor interest in niche consumer plays.

On the downside, PB Fintech was the most severely hit stock across large and midcap categories, plunging 35.98% amid disappointing earnings and cautious guidance. Other notable decliners included Max Financial (-9.81%) and L&T Finance Ltd (-8.92%), both dragged down by sector-wide weakness and risk aversion.

In the small-cap segment, New India Assura declined 5.36%, adding to the pressure on smaller stocks.

Market Breadth and Capitalisation Trends

Market breadth was decidedly negative, with only 82 advances against 415 declines on the BSE 500 index, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 0.2x. This lopsided breadth highlights the pervasive selling pressure across the market.

Capitalisation-wise, the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap index fell 1.28%, the BSE 100 index declined 1.77%, and the S&P BSE 150 Midcap index dropped 2.07%, confirming that mid and small caps are underperforming large caps and contributing to the overall market weakness.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Institutional Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) activity remained subdued amid global uncertainties and cautious domestic outlook. While exact net flows were not disclosed, the broad market weakness and sectoral sell-offs suggest that FIIs were net sellers, particularly in financials and midcaps. DIIs appeared to be on the sidelines, with limited buying interest to counterbalance the selling pressure.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets were subdued, with major indices in the US and Europe trading lower amid concerns over inflationary pressures and central bank policy tightening. Asian markets also showed mixed performance, adding to the cautious sentiment in Indian markets. The subdued global backdrop, combined with domestic macroeconomic concerns, weighed on investor confidence, contributing to the broad-based sell-off.

Technical Outlook and Near-Term Expectations

Technically, the Nifty’s failure to hold above its 50 DMA and the bearish crossover with the 200 DMA indicate a continuation of the downtrend in the near term. The index’s proximity to its 52-week low suggests that investors should exercise caution and monitor key support levels closely. Midcap and small-cap segments remain vulnerable, and any recovery is likely to be selective and sector-specific.

Investors may find opportunities in defensive sectors such as IT, which demonstrated resilience today, and select large-cap stocks with strong fundamentals and earnings visibility. However, risk appetite remains muted, and volatility is expected to persist until clearer macroeconomic signals emerge.

Summary

In summary, the Indian equity market’s sharp decline on 24 Sep 2026 was driven by broad-based selling, with financials and midcaps leading the losses. The IT sector stood out as a relative outperformer, providing some respite amid the weakness. Market breadth was poor, and technical indicators suggest further downside risk in the near term. Investors should remain cautious, focusing on quality stocks and sectors with resilient earnings amid ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties.
