Sensex Dips 0.5% Amid Mixed Sectoral Trends; Metal Sector Leads Gains

Sensex and Nifty Performance Overview

The BSE Sensex opened sharply lower by 361.36 points and ended the day down 378.08 points, or 0.50%, at 75,199.50. This marks a continuation of the recent downtrend, with the index having lost 3.02% over the past three weeks. The Sensex currently trades 4.86% above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, indicating some resilience but also highlighting the pressure on the benchmark. Technical indicators remain bearish, with the Sensex trading below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, signalling a negative medium-term trend.

Sectoral Trends: Metals Lead, IT Lags

Out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, 16 advanced while 22 declined, underscoring a broad-based weakness. The metal sector was the top performer, surging 2.21% on the back of robust gains in stocks such as Graphite India, which soared 16.81%, and MRPL, which rose 6.50%. This rally was supported by positive global commodity prices and improving demand outlooks.

Conversely, the IT sector was the biggest laggard, with the NIFTY IT index falling 3.17%. Major IT stocks like Coforge and Infosys dragged the sector down, declining 4.80% and 4.30% respectively. The sector’s weakness reflects concerns over margin pressures and cautious guidance from global clients amid macroeconomic uncertainties.

Market Breadth and Mid & Small Caps

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 index was notably weak at 0.62x, with 190 advances against 305 declines, signalling a bearish market breadth. Midcap and smallcap indices also struggled, with the S&P BSE 150 Midcap index slipping 0.06% and the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap index falling 0.22%. The BSE100 index declined 0.28%, reflecting the cautious mood across market capitalisation segments.

Top Gainers and Losers

Among the top gainers on the BSE500, Graphite India led with a remarkable 16.81% jump, followed by C P C L at 8.86% and MRPL at 6.50%. These stocks benefited from sector-specific tailwinds and positive earnings outlooks. On the downside, Coforge was the largest loser, dropping 4.80%, followed by Infosys at -4.30% and GNFC at -3.96%, reflecting sectoral headwinds and profit booking.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Institutional Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) remained cautious, with net selling pressure evident in the broader market. The subdued participation from FIIs, amid global uncertainties including fluctuating US treasury yields and geopolitical tensions, contributed to the lacklustre market performance. DIIs maintained a relatively neutral stance, selectively buying in defensive sectors but refraining from aggressive accumulation.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets exhibited mixed trends, with US indices showing modest gains while European and Asian markets closed lower. The cautious tone was influenced by concerns over inflation persistence and central bank policy tightening. Crude oil prices remained volatile, impacting energy and metal stocks domestically. The Indian rupee traded steady against the US dollar, providing some relief to import-dependent sectors.

Upcoming Corporate Results to Watch

Investors are eyeing the upcoming quarterly results of Lalithaa Jewels and Horizon Industries, both scheduled to announce on 11 Sep 2026. These results are expected to provide further direction to their respective sectors and could influence market sentiment in the near term.

Large Cap Movers

Among large caps, Adani Enterprises was the top gainer, surging 5.00% on positive sectoral developments and renewed investor interest. On the other hand, Coforge was the largest large-cap loser, falling 4.80%, reflecting profit booking and sectoral weakness. Mid-cap and small-cap segments mirrored this trend, with One 97 gaining 4.64% as the top mid-cap performer, while GNFC declined 3.96% as the top small-cap laggard.

Technical Outlook and Market Sentiment

The technical landscape remains challenging for the Sensex, with the index trading below key moving averages and a negative momentum prevailing. The recent three-week decline of over 3% suggests that investors are cautious amid mixed earnings prospects and global uncertainties. Market breadth, with a 0.62x advance-decline ratio, indicates that selling pressure is broad-based rather than concentrated.

Sector rotation is evident, with investors favouring metals and select industrials while shunning IT and other defensive sectors. This rotation may continue in the near term as market participants digest upcoming corporate earnings and global macroeconomic developments.

Conclusion

In summary, the Indian equity market on 9 Sep 2026 experienced a modest correction led by IT sector weakness and cautious investor sentiment. The metal sector’s outperformance provided some respite, supported by favourable commodity prices. Market breadth and institutional activity suggest a cautious stance, with investors awaiting clearer cues from upcoming earnings and global developments. Technical indicators point to a challenging near-term outlook, underscoring the need for selective stock picking and risk management.
