Sensex Dips 0.53% as IT Sector Slumps; Commodities Shine Amid Mixed Market Breadth

Sensex and Nifty Trends

After opening 138.04 points lower, the Sensex extended losses to close down 0.53%. The index is currently trading 1.16% above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, signalling a fragile recovery attempt. Notably, the Sensex is trading below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, indicating a bearish technical setup. Over the past three weeks, the Sensex has declined by 3.21%, reflecting sustained selling pressure amid global uncertainties and domestic concerns.

The Nifty index mirrored this weakness, with key sectors showing divergent performances. Market breadth was negative, with 180 advances against 320 declines on the BSE500, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 0.56x, underscoring the cautious mood among investors.

Sectoral Performance: Commodities Shine, IT Struggles

Out of 38 sectors tracked, only 14 advanced while 24 declined, highlighting broad-based weakness. The S&P BSE Commodities sector emerged as the top gainer, surging 4.13% on the back of firm global commodity prices and renewed demand optimism. This sector's outperformance provided some respite to the broader market.

Conversely, the NIFTY IT sector was the biggest laggard, falling 1.53%. The technology space faced selling pressure amid concerns over global demand slowdown and profit booking after recent gains. Other sectors such as financials and consumer discretionary also witnessed subdued trading, contributing to the overall market softness.

Large, Mid and Small Cap Movements

Among large caps, Indus Towers was the top gainer, rising 2.70%, supported by positive sectoral news and steady demand for telecom infrastructure. On the downside, PB Fintech was the largest loser across both large and mid caps, plunging 5.01% amid profit booking and cautious outlook.

Mid caps traded largely flat, with the S&P BSE 150 Midcap Index declining 0.35%. Mankind Pharma stood out as the top mid cap gainer, surging 4.39% on robust volume and favourable sectoral trends. Small caps showed slight resilience, with the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap Index inching up 0.08%. Kirloskar Oil led the small cap rally, gaining 8.58%, while KFin Technologies declined 4.24%, marking the biggest small cap loser.

Market Breadth and Investor Activity

The market breadth remained weak with more than 320 stocks declining on the BSE500 compared to 180 advancing, reflecting a cautious stance among investors. The BSE100 index fell 0.48%, further confirming the broad-based weakness in the market.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) activity remained subdued, with no significant inflows or outflows reported during the session. This lack of decisive institutional participation added to the market's muted momentum.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets remained under pressure amid concerns over slowing economic growth and persistent inflationary pressures in major economies. Weakness in US and European indices weighed on investor sentiment in India. Additionally, cautious commentary from central banks globally regarding future interest rate policies contributed to risk-off sentiment.

Commodity prices, however, showed strength, supporting the commodities sector in India. This divergence between global equity weakness and commodity strength created a mixed environment for Indian markets.

Upcoming Corporate Results

Investors are also keeping an eye on upcoming corporate earnings, with Manipal Payment scheduled to announce results on 01 Oct 2026. Market participants will be watching closely for any guidance or surprises that could influence sectoral and broader market trends in the near term.

Outlook and Conclusion

The Indian equity market remains in a consolidation phase amid mixed domestic and global cues. The technical picture for the Sensex is bearish in the short term, with the index trading below key moving averages and recent losses accumulating over the past three weeks. Sectoral divergences, with commodities outperforming and IT lagging, suggest selective opportunities rather than broad-based strength.

Investors are advised to monitor global developments closely, especially central bank policies and economic data, which will continue to influence market direction. Meanwhile, stock-specific moves in mid and small caps, such as Kirloskar Oil and Mankind Pharma, offer pockets of interest for those seeking alpha in a cautious environment.

Overall, the market is likely to remain volatile in the near term, with a focus on earnings updates and global macroeconomic developments to provide clearer directional cues.
