The Indian equity market witnessed a broad-based decline on 24 Sep 2026, with the Sensex falling nearly 1% amid persistent selling pressure. While the IT sector emerged as the top performer, financial stocks bore the brunt of the downturn, reflecting cautious investor sentiment amid mixed global cues and subdued domestic momentum.
Sensex Dips Nearly 1% Amid Broad Market Weakness; IT Sector Shines

Sensex and Nifty Trends

The BSE Sensex opened sharply lower by 555.85 points and continued to trade under pressure throughout the session, closing at 74,154.16, down 0.9%. This marks a loss of 693.64 points or 0.93% from the previous close. The index remains 3.52% above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, signalling that the market is still navigating a fragile phase. Notably, the Sensex is trading below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, indicating a bearish technical setup. Over the past three weeks, the Sensex has declined by 3.09%, underscoring the ongoing weakness in the broader market.

Similarly, the Nifty index mirrored this downtrend, pressured by weak sectoral performances and subdued investor appetite. The market breadth was notably weak, with only 98 advances against 399 declines across the BSE500 universe, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 0.25x. This lopsided breadth highlights the dominance of selling pressure across most sectors.

Sectoral Performance: IT Leads, Finance Lags

Out of 38 sectors tracked, only 5 managed to close in positive territory, while 33 sectors declined. The BSE IT sector was the standout performer, rallying 2.96% on the back of strong buying interest in select large-cap technology stocks. This sector’s resilience contrasts sharply with the broader market weakness and reflects investors’ preference for defensive growth amid uncertainty.

Conversely, the Nifty Finance sector was the worst hit, falling 1.77%. Financial stocks, particularly those in the non-banking financial company (NBFC) space, faced intense selling pressure. The sector’s underperformance weighed heavily on the overall market indices, given its significant weightage.

Market Capitalisation Segments: Small and Midcaps Also Under Pressure

The S&P BSE 250 Smallcap index declined by 0.59%, while the BSE100 Largecap index fell 1.02%. The S&P BSE 150 Midcap index was down 1.13%, indicating that mid and small-cap stocks were not spared from the selling wave. Small caps traded largely flat but lacked any meaningful upside momentum, reflecting investor caution.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among the BSE500 stocks, Caplin Point Laboratories emerged as the top gainer, surging 6.03%, followed by Carborundum Universal with a 4.46% gain and A B Real Estate up 4.06%. These stocks bucked the broader market trend, driven by sector-specific catalysts and selective buying.

On the downside, PB Fintech was the most significant loser, plunging 20.00% across large and mid-cap segments. Max Financial and L&T Finance Ltd also suffered steep declines of 10.93% and 7.37%, respectively, reflecting the broader weakness in financials and NBFCs. Among small caps, Aegis Vopak Term tanked 5.55%, adding to the negative sentiment in the segment.

Top Large, Mid and Small Cap Movers

ICICI Lombard was the top large-cap gainer, rising 3.16%, supported by robust quarterly results and positive outlook. Escorts Kubota led the mid-cap gainers with a 2.09% increase, benefiting from improved demand prospects in the agricultural machinery sector. Caplin Point Lab also topped the small-cap gainers with its 6.03% rally.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Institutional Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers, continuing their cautious stance amid global uncertainties and mixed economic data. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) showed limited buying interest but were unable to offset the selling pressure from FIIs and retail investors. This divergence contributed to the subdued market performance and lack of sustained rallies.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets were mixed, with US and European indices showing modest gains while Asian markets traded lower. Concerns over inflationary pressures, central bank policy tightening, and geopolitical tensions weighed on investor sentiment worldwide. These factors filtered into the Indian market, limiting upside potential and encouraging profit-taking in riskier segments.

Technical Outlook and Moving Averages

Technically, the Sensex trading below its 50 DMA, which itself is below the 200 DMA, signals a bearish trend in the near term. The index’s failure to reclaim these key moving averages suggests that investors remain cautious and that further downside cannot be ruled out without a sustained recovery in market breadth and sectoral leadership.

Sectoral and Stock-Level Insights for Investors

Investors should note the divergence between the IT sector’s strength and the financial sector’s weakness. Select IT stocks continue to offer defensive qualities amid volatility, while financials, especially NBFCs, require careful scrutiny due to ongoing headwinds. Mid and small-cap stocks remain vulnerable to broader market swings and should be approached with caution.

Market Outlook

Given the current technical and fundamental backdrop, the market is likely to remain volatile in the near term. Investors should focus on quality stocks with strong fundamentals and resilient business models, particularly in sectors showing relative strength such as IT. Caution is warranted in cyclical and financial sectors until clearer signs of recovery emerge.

Overall, the market’s inability to sustain gains and the dominance of declining stocks suggest that a consolidation or correction phase may continue before a meaningful uptrend can be established. Monitoring global developments and domestic economic indicators will be crucial for gauging the next directional move.
