Sensex Drops Over 1.6% Amid Broad Market Weakness; IT Sector Shines

Sensex and Nifty: Technical Weakness Persists

The benchmark Sensex opened 555.85 points lower and extended losses throughout the session, ultimately falling 1.65% from the previous close. The index is now trading just 2.78% above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, signalling heightened vulnerability. Notably, the Sensex remains below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, a classic bearish technical formation indicating sustained downward momentum.

Over the past three weeks, the Sensex has declined by 3.82%, reflecting a persistent risk-off sentiment among investors. The Nifty mirrored this trend, with mid and small cap indices underperforming sharply, signalling a broad-based market correction rather than isolated sectoral weakness.

Sectoral Performance: IT Shines Amid Broad Weakness

Out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, only three managed to close in positive territory, underscoring the widespread selling pressure. The S&P BSE Information Technology sector was the standout performer, gaining 2.96%, buoyed by select large cap IT stocks that bucked the broader market trend. Conversely, the telecommunications sector was the worst hit, declining 2.37%, weighed down by profit booking and concerns over regulatory challenges.

Other major sectors such as financials, consumer discretionary, and industrials also faced significant pressure, contributing to the overall negative market tone. The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 index was a stark 60 advances to 440 declines, a ratio of just 0.14x, highlighting the breadth of the sell-off.

Mid and Small Caps Bear the Brunt

The S&P BSE 150 Midcap index fell 2.0%, while the BSE 100 Large Cap index declined 1.75%. Small caps were not spared, with the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap index dropping 1.43%. This underperformance in mid and small caps often signals risk aversion among retail and institutional investors, who tend to favour safer large cap stocks during volatile periods.

Among the top gainers on the BSE500, Allied Blenders led the small cap segment with a robust 5.91% gain, followed by Sun TV Network at 5.54% and ICICI Lombard, the top large cap gainer, rising 4.48%. In the mid cap space, Multi Commodity Exchange (Multi Comm. Exc.) advanced 2.43%, providing some respite amid the broader weakness.

Top Losers Highlight Market Stress

On the downside, PB Fintech was the most severely impacted stock across all capitalisation segments, plunging 32.00%. This sharp fall significantly dragged down the mid cap and small cap indices. Max Financial Services also suffered a steep decline of 11.94%, while L&T Finance Ltd fell 9.24%, reflecting investor concerns over financial sector valuations and asset quality.

New India Assurance was the top small cap loser, down 5.70%, adding to the negative sentiment in the insurance and financial services space.

Foreign Institutional Investors and Domestic Institutional Investors Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers, continuing their cautious stance amid global uncertainties and domestic macroeconomic concerns. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) showed limited buying interest, insufficient to offset the selling pressure from FIIs. This imbalance contributed to the sharp decline in market indices and subdued investor confidence.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets were subdued, with major indices in the US and Europe trading lower amid concerns over inflationary pressures and central bank policy tightening. Asian markets also reflected cautious sentiment, influenced by mixed economic data and geopolitical tensions. These global headwinds weighed on Indian equities, exacerbating the domestic market weakness.

Technical Outlook and Investor Implications

The technical picture for the Sensex and Nifty remains bearish in the short to medium term. The breach below key moving averages and proximity to 52-week lows suggest that investors should exercise caution. The poor market breadth and sectoral weakness indicate that the current correction may persist until clearer signs of economic stability and corporate earnings recovery emerge.

Investors are advised to focus on fundamentally strong large caps and sectors demonstrating resilience, such as IT, while avoiding stocks exhibiting extreme volatility or weak financial metrics. Monitoring foreign fund flows and global developments will be crucial in assessing market direction in the coming weeks.

Summary

In summary, the Indian equity market experienced a broad-based sell-off on 24 September 2026, with the Sensex falling sharply and market breadth deteriorating to alarming levels. Sectoral performance was uneven, with IT providing a rare bright spot amid widespread declines. Mid and small caps bore the brunt of the correction, led by significant losses in PB Fintech and other financial stocks. Foreign selling and cautious domestic buying further pressured the market, while global uncertainties compounded investor concerns.

Given the current technical and fundamental backdrop, investors should prioritise quality stocks with strong balance sheets and sustainable earnings growth, while remaining vigilant to evolving macroeconomic and geopolitical developments.
