Sensex Edges Higher as Auto and Healthcare Sectors Hit New Highs; Mixed Mid and Small Cap Performance

Sensex and Nifty Trends

The benchmark Sensex opened flat with a marginal change of 2.42 points but gradually gained momentum to close higher by 121.67 points, marking a 0.15% increase. This rise extends the Sensex’s recent positive trajectory, having gained 3.37% over the past three weeks. The index is currently trading above its 50-day moving average (DMA), signalling short-term strength, although the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, indicating that the longer-term trend has yet to fully confirm a sustained uptrend.

The Nifty mirrored this cautious optimism, supported by sectoral gains, particularly in autos and healthcare, which hit new 52-week highs. However, the broader market showed signs of divergence, with mid and small caps trading flat or slightly lower, reflecting selective investor interest.

Sectoral Performance: Leaders and Laggards

Out of 38 sectors tracked, 23 advanced while 15 declined, underscoring a market with mixed breadth. The BSE Consumer Durables (CD) sector emerged as the top gainer, rising 0.74%, driven by robust demand and positive earnings outlooks. Conversely, the NIFTY PSU Bank (NIFTYPSE) sector lagged, declining 0.33%, weighed down by concerns over asset quality and slower credit growth.

Notably, the S&P BSE Auto and S&P BSE Healthcare indices reached new 52-week highs, reflecting strong investor confidence in these sectors. The auto sector’s rally was supported by improving domestic demand and export prospects, while healthcare benefited from steady earnings growth and defensive qualities amid global uncertainties.

Market Breadth and Capitalisation Trends

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 was slightly negative at 0.95x, with 240 stocks advancing against 253 declining. This indicates a cautious market mood with a slight tilt towards profit-taking or consolidation. Large caps outperformed, with the BSE100 index rising 0.16%, while the S&P BSE 150 Midcap and S&P BSE 250 Smallcap indices edged down by 0.01% each, reflecting subdued activity in smaller stocks.

Mid caps traded flat overall, suggesting investors remain selective amid mixed earnings prospects and valuation concerns. The market’s leadership by large caps highlights a preference for stability and liquidity in uncertain global conditions.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among large caps, United Spirits led the gainers with a 3.19% rise, supported by strong volume and positive sectoral sentiment. Hitachi Energy was the standout mid cap, surging 6.75%, while The Ramco Cement topped small caps with a 3.52% gain, reflecting renewed investor interest in quality mid and small cap stocks.

On the downside, Indus Towers was the largest large cap loser, falling 3.23%, pressured by concerns over telecom sector regulation and competitive intensity. NLC India declined sharply by 7.00%, marking the biggest mid cap loss, amid weak coal sector fundamentals and regulatory headwinds. Kaynes Technology was the top small cap laggard, down 5.76%, reflecting profit booking after recent gains.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Institutional Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) activity remained mixed, reflecting global uncertainties and cautious positioning ahead of key earnings. While detailed net inflow/outflow figures are not disclosed, the market’s modest gains alongside mixed breadth suggest that institutional investors are balancing risk and opportunity carefully. The cautious stance is also evident in the flat mid and small cap performance, where institutional participation tends to be more pronounced.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets showed a mixed picture, with US and European indices consolidating after recent rallies, while Asian markets were broadly flat. Concerns over inflation trajectories, central bank policies, and geopolitical tensions continue to influence investor sentiment worldwide. The Indian market’s resilience amid these factors highlights its relative attractiveness, supported by strong domestic consumption and corporate earnings momentum.

Upcoming Corporate Earnings to Watch

Investors are closely monitoring the upcoming quarterly results of key companies scheduled for 11 Aug 2026, including Siemens, Zydus Lifesciences, and MRF. These earnings releases are expected to provide further clarity on sectoral trends and corporate profitability, potentially influencing market direction in the near term.

Technical Outlook and Market Sentiment

Technically, the Sensex’s position above the 50DMA is a positive short-term indicator, suggesting potential for further gains if the index can sustain this level. However, the 50DMA remaining below the 200DMA signals that investors should remain cautious until a more definitive long-term uptrend is established. Market sentiment appears cautiously optimistic, with selective buying in large caps and defensive sectors like healthcare and consumer durables.
