Sensex Edges Higher as BSE CG Leads Gains Amid IT Sector Weakness

Sensex and Nifty: Marginal Gains Amid Mixed Sentiment

The benchmark Sensex opened flat with a slight positive bias, gaining 70.51 points initially but settling into a narrow range throughout the day. Trading above its 50-day moving average (DMA) at 77,963.37, the index showed resilience; however, the 50DMA remains below the 200DMA, signalling a cautious medium-term trend. The Nifty mirrored this subdued optimism, with large caps leading the charge but unable to generate significant momentum.

Mid-cap and small-cap indices outperformed marginally, with the S&P BSE 150 Midcap Index rising 0.19% and the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap Index advancing 0.29%. The broader BSE 500 index also edged higher by 0.13%, reflecting a selective buying interest beyond the headline stocks.

Sectoral Performance: Capital Goods Shine, IT Faces Headwinds

Out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, 31 advanced while 7 declined, indicating broad-based participation. The capital goods sector (BSE CG) emerged as the top performer, gaining 1.18%, buoyed by strong buying in industrial and infrastructure-related stocks. This sector’s outperformance was led by CG Power & Industrial Solutions, which surged 4.26%, topping both large and mid-cap gainers.

Conversely, the IT sector (BSE IT) was the laggard, declining 2.64%. Persistent Systems was the largest drag among large caps, falling 3.50%, reflecting profit-taking and cautious outlooks amid global tech spending concerns. Other IT stocks also faced selling pressure, weighing on the overall market sentiment.

Top Gainers and Losers: Selective Strength and Sharp Declines

Among the BSE 500 constituents, Hyundai Motor India led the gainers with a robust 6.13% rise, followed by Aarti Industries at 5.48% and Mahanagar Gas at 5.13%. These stocks benefited from sector-specific tailwinds and positive investor sentiment ahead of upcoming quarterly results.

On the downside, Thermax plunged 15.07%, marking the steepest fall among mid caps, amid profit booking and subdued outlook. Data Pattern and Swiggy also faced sharp declines of 6.40% and 4.41% respectively, reflecting sector-specific challenges and profit-taking.

Market Breadth and Capitalisation Trends

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE 500 stood at a healthy 1.99x, with 328 advances against 165 declines, signalling a broadly positive market breadth. Large caps traded largely flat, with selective pockets of strength and weakness. Mid and small caps showed relative strength, supported by sectoral rotation and investor interest in growth-oriented themes.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Investor Activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained cautious, with subdued buying interest amid mixed global cues. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) showed moderate participation, supporting the market in pockets but refraining from aggressive accumulation. This cautious stance reflects ongoing concerns over global economic growth, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical uncertainties.

Global Cues and Their Impact on Indian Markets

Global markets exhibited mixed trends, with US indices consolidating after recent gains and European markets trading cautiously ahead of key economic data releases. Asian markets were largely flat, reflecting investor uncertainty over central bank policies and economic growth prospects. These global factors contributed to the restrained momentum in Indian equities, with investors awaiting clearer directional signals.

Upcoming Corporate Results to Watch

Market participants are closely monitoring the upcoming quarterly results of key companies scheduled for 1 Aug 2026, including Divi's Laboratories, Muthoot Finance, and APL Apollo Tubes. These results are expected to provide fresh impetus and directional cues for their respective sectors and the broader market.

Outlook and Technical Assessment

Technically, the Sensex’s ability to hold above the 50DMA is a positive sign, though the 50DMA remaining below the 200DMA suggests that the market is yet to confirm a sustained uptrend. Investors should watch for a decisive breakout above key resistance levels to confirm bullish momentum. Sector rotation towards capital goods and selective mid caps could offer tactical opportunities, while caution is warranted in IT and other vulnerable sectors.
