The Indian equity markets closed with modest gains on 10 December 2025, as the Sensex edged higher by 129.60 points to settle at 84,795.88, reflecting a 0.15% rise. The broader market showed healthy participation with 36 out of 38 sectors advancing, led by the metals sector, while technology stocks lagged slightly. Market breadth remained positive, supported by strong performances in small and mid-cap segments amid mixed global cues and cautious foreign institutional investor activity.

Sensex and Nifty Trends

The benchmark Sensex opened flat with a slight dip of 58.79 points but gradually recovered to close in positive territory. At 84,795.88, the index remains approximately 1.61% below its 52-week high of 86,159.02. The index is trading above its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned above the 200 DMA, signalling a sustained medium-term uptrend. Large-cap stocks traded largely flat, with selective gains and losses balancing the overall movement.

Sectoral Performance: Metals Lead, Technology Trails

Among the 38 sectors tracked, 36 advanced while only two sectors declined. The metals sector emerged as the top performer, registering a gain of 0.96%, buoyed by positive commodity price trends and robust demand outlook. Conversely, the technology sector experienced a marginal decline of 0.09%, reflecting some profit-taking and subdued global IT spending sentiments.

Market Breadth and Capitalisation Segments

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 index stood at a healthy 2.69 times, with 361 stocks advancing against 134 declining. This breadth indicates broad-based buying interest across the market. Small-cap stocks led the gains with the BSE Small Cap index rising by 0.73%, followed by the BSE Mid Cap and BSE100 indices, each up by 0.23%. This suggests investor preference for riskier, growth-oriented segments amid a stable macroeconomic backdrop.

Within the BSE500 universe, Jyoti CNC Automation led the gainers with a rise of 6.74%, followed by MMTC at 5.96% and New India Assurance at 4.97%. These stocks benefited from sector-specific catalysts and positive earnings momentum. On the downside, Tata Tele Mah. declined by 4.85%, ERIS Lifescience by 4.15%, and One 97 by 2.50%, reflecting profit booking and sectoral pressures.

Focusing on market capitalisation segments, AU Small Finance Bank was the top large-cap gainer, advancing 2.83%. New India Assurance also led the mid-cap segment with a 4.97% gain, while S T C outperformed in the small-cap space with a notable 10.61% rise. Conversely, Interglobe Aviation was the largest large-cap decliner, down 0.75%. One 97 and Filatex Fashions were the biggest losers in mid and small caps, falling 2.50% and 6.98% respectively.

Foreign Institutional and Domestic Investor Activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) exhibited cautious behaviour amid mixed global cues, with net inflows remaining subdued. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued to support the market, particularly in mid and small-cap segments, which helped sustain the positive momentum. This dynamic reflects a cautious optimism among market participants as they weigh domestic growth prospects against external uncertainties.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets showed a mixed trend, with US indices fluctuating amid ongoing economic data releases and geopolitical developments. Commodity prices, especially metals, maintained strength, supporting the rally in the Indian metals sector. Currency movements remained stable, with the Indian rupee holding steady against the US dollar, providing a supportive backdrop for foreign investment flows.

Outlook and Investor Considerations

The current market environment reflects a cautious but constructive stance among investors. The Sensex’s position above key moving averages suggests underlying strength, while the breadth of advancing sectors and strong small-cap performance indicate broad participation. However, selective weakness in technology and certain mid-cap stocks highlights the need for careful stock selection.

Investors may find opportunities in sectors benefiting from commodity strength, such as metals, and in resilient financial stocks like AU Small Finance Bank. Monitoring foreign institutional flows and global economic developments will remain crucial in assessing near-term market direction.

Summary

On 10 December 2025, the Indian equity markets demonstrated resilience with the Sensex closing higher by 0.15%, supported by a broad rally across 36 sectors. Metals led the gains while technology lagged slightly. Market breadth was positive with a 2.69 advance-decline ratio, and small-cap stocks outperformed. Mixed global cues and cautious foreign investor activity shaped the trading session, with domestic investors providing steady support. The market’s technical positioning and sectoral trends suggest a cautiously optimistic outlook for investors navigating the current landscape.
