Indian equity markets witnessed a broad-based sell-off on 24 Jul 2026, with the Sensex plunging 841.86 points, or 1.10%, to close at 75,549.53. The Nifty followed suit, dragged down by widespread sectoral weakness and subdued investor sentiment amid cautious global cues. Market breadth was heavily skewed towards declines, reflecting a risk-off mood among participants.
Sensex Slips Over 840 Points as Market Sentiment Turns Bearish Across Sectors

Sensex and Nifty Trends

The benchmark Sensex opened sharply lower by 683.20 points and extended losses throughout the session, ending below its 50-day moving average (DMA). Notably, the 50 DMA itself remains below the 200 DMA, signalling a bearish technical setup. The Nifty 50 index mirrored this trend, with large caps trading largely flat but unable to provide support to the broader market.

The S&P BSE 100 index declined by 0.99%, while the midcap and smallcap indices fared worse, falling 1.15% and 1.27% respectively. This underperformance in mid and small caps highlights investors’ preference for safer, blue-chip stocks amid heightened volatility.

Sectoral Performance: All Sectors in the Red

In a rare and concerning development, none of the 38 sectors tracked on the BSE advanced today. All sectors closed in negative territory, underscoring the pervasive weakness across the market. The S&P BSE Telecommunication sector was the worst hit, shedding 2.47% as investors reacted to sector-specific headwinds and profit booking.

Other key sectors such as banking, IT, consumer goods, and energy also declined, reflecting a broad-based retreat. This uniform sectoral weakness suggests a lack of fresh buying interest and a cautious stance ahead of upcoming corporate earnings.

Top Gainers and Losers

Despite the overall downtrend, a few stocks managed to buck the tide. United Spirits emerged as the top large-cap gainer, surging 4.11% on the back of positive industry outlook and favourable demand prospects. Among midcaps, SRF gained 2.05%, while HEG led the small-cap segment with a 3.07% rise, supported by selective buying interest.

Conversely, Hero MotoCorp was the largest large-cap loser, dropping 3.27% amid concerns over slowing two-wheeler sales. Motilal Oswal Financial Services plummeted 9.58%, marking the steepest fall among midcaps, weighed down by disappointing sectoral trends and profit booking. Go Digit General Insurance also faced heavy selling pressure, declining 7.74% in the small-cap space. Swiggy’s shares fell 6.40%, reflecting investor caution in the consumer tech segment.

Market Breadth and Investor Activity

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE 500 was severely lopsided, with only 65 stocks advancing against 434 declining, resulting in a ratio of 0.15x. This indicates a broad-based sell-off and weak market breadth, which often precedes further downside pressure.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) remained net sellers, continuing their cautious stance amid global uncertainties and domestic macroeconomic concerns. The lack of fresh inflows from these key participants added to the market’s downward momentum.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets remained subdued amid persistent concerns over inflationary pressures, tightening monetary policies, and geopolitical tensions. Asian indices closed mostly lower, while European markets traded cautiously. These external factors weighed on investor sentiment in India, contributing to the cautious approach seen in domestic equities.

Additionally, the US Federal Reserve’s recent hawkish stance and mixed economic data have heightened uncertainty, prompting investors to adopt a risk-off posture. This global backdrop has compounded domestic challenges, limiting the scope for a sustained market rally in the near term.

Upcoming Corporate Earnings to Watch

Market participants are now turning their focus to key upcoming quarterly results that could provide fresh direction. AU Small Finance Bank and IDFC First Bank are scheduled to announce earnings on 25 Jul 2026, while Indus Towers will report on 27 Jul 2026. These results will be closely scrutinised for insights into sectoral trends and corporate performance amid a challenging macroeconomic environment.

Technical Outlook

The Sensex’s failure to hold above its 50 DMA and the continued positioning of the 50 DMA below the 200 DMA signal a bearish technical setup. This suggests that the index may face further downside pressure unless there is a decisive recovery in buying interest. Investors should monitor key support levels and be cautious with fresh exposures until market breadth improves and sectoral leadership emerges.

Investor Takeaway

Today’s market action underscores the prevailing cautious sentiment among investors amid a confluence of domestic and global headwinds. The broad-based sectoral declines and weak market breadth suggest that risk appetite remains subdued. Large caps have shown relative resilience, but the mid and small cap segments continue to face selling pressure.

Investors should remain vigilant and consider defensive positioning while awaiting clearer signals from upcoming corporate earnings and global developments. Selective stock picking, focusing on companies with strong fundamentals and turnaround potential, may offer better risk-reward opportunities in the current environment.
