State Bank of India (SBI), one of the largest public banks in India, has recently been downgraded to a 'Hold' rating by MarketsMOJO on July 22, 2024. This decision was based on various factors, including the bank's strong lending practices with a low Gross NPA ratio of 2.76%. Additionally, SBI has shown healthy long-term growth with an annual net profit growth rate of 323.26%.In the latest quarter, SBI has reported positive results, with the lowest Gross NPA ratio of 2.24%, the highest interest earned at Rs 111,042.63 crore, and the highest Net Interest Income (NII) at Rs 41,655.19 crore. These numbers reflect the bank's strong financial performance.
From a technical standpoint, SBI's stock is currently in a mildly bullish range, with multiple indicators such as MACD, Bollinger Band, KST, and OBV showing bullish signals. Moreover, the stock has a high institutional holding of 34.8%, indicating that these investors have better capabilities and resources to analyze the company's fundamentals.
SBI has also shown consistent returns over the last three years, outperforming the BSE 500 index in each of the last three annual periods. With a market capitalization of Rs 7,93,576 crore, SBI is the biggest company in the public bank sector, constituting 43.44% of the entire sector. Its annual sales of Rs 415,130.66 crore make up 37.44% of the industry.
However, with a ROA of 1.1, SBI's valuation is considered expensive, with a price to book value of 2.1. Nevertheless, the stock is currently trading at a fair value compared to its average historical valuations. In the past year, while the stock has generated a return of 42.84%, its profits have risen by 31.9%, resulting in a PEG ratio of 0.4.
In conclusion, while SBI's stock has been downgraded to a 'Hold' rating, the bank's strong financial performance, positive results, and consistent returns make it a stable investment option for the long term.
