Sensex Dips 0.75% Amid Broad Sector Weakness; Utilities Shine as IT Slumps

Sensex and Nifty Performance Overview

The BSE Sensex opened sharply lower by 361.36 points but managed to recover partially, ending the day down 0.75%. The index currently trades approximately 4.62% above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, signalling that the market remains closer to its recent lows than highs. Technical indicators show the Sensex trading below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, suggesting a bearish trend in the medium term. Over the past three weeks, the Sensex has declined by 3.27%, underscoring persistent selling pressure.

The Nifty 50 mirrored this weakness, with midcap and smallcap indices also underperforming. The S&P BSE 150 Midcap Index fell by 0.39%, while the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap Index declined 0.27%. The broader BSE 100 index dropped 0.58%, indicating a widespread risk-off mood among investors.

Sectoral Trends: Utilities Lead, IT Lags

Out of 38 sectors tracked on the BSE, only 15 advanced while 23 declined, reflecting a broad-based market weakness. The S&P BSE Utilities sector emerged as the top gainer, rising 1.49%, buoyed by select power and infrastructure stocks. This sector’s resilience highlights investor preference for defensive plays amid volatility.

Conversely, the BSE Information Technology (IT) sector was the worst performer, falling 2.84%. The IT sector’s decline weighed heavily on the indices, driven by profit booking and concerns over global demand for IT services. This sector’s underperformance contrasts sharply with the defensive utilities sector, illustrating the bifurcation in market leadership.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among the BSE 500 constituents, Graphite India was the standout performer, surging 17.21% on robust buying interest. HEG and Finolex Cables also posted strong gains of 4.99% and 4.79% respectively, supported by positive sectoral momentum and favourable technical setups.

On the downside, Coforge was the largest decliner, dropping 5.28%. This stock also led losses in the midcap segment. GNFC and IFCI followed with declines of 4.83% and 3.87% respectively, reflecting sector-specific headwinds and profit-taking.

Large-cap stocks showed mixed trends with One 97 emerging as the top gainer, rising 4.13%, while Coforge was the top large-cap loser. Torrent Power led midcap gains with a 4.25% rise, reinforcing the strength in the utilities space.

Market Breadth and Investor Activity

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE 500 was notably weak at 0.4x, with 142 advances against 357 declines. This skewed breadth indicates that the majority of stocks faced selling pressure, reinforcing the cautious stance among market participants.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) activity remained subdued, with no significant inflows or outflows reported today. This lack of decisive institutional participation contributed to the muted market momentum. Investors appear to be awaiting upcoming quarterly results, including those from Lalithaa Jewel and Horizon Industri, both scheduled for 11 Sep 2026, which could provide fresh catalysts.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets traded cautiously amid mixed economic data and geopolitical uncertainties. Asian indices showed modest declines, while European markets were subdued ahead of key central bank meetings. The cautious global backdrop weighed on Indian equities, particularly the export-oriented IT sector, which is sensitive to global demand fluctuations.

Crude oil prices remained relatively stable, providing some relief to inflation concerns, but currency volatility persisted, adding to market uncertainty. These external factors combined to limit upside potential for domestic markets.

Outlook and Investor Takeaways

With the Sensex trading below key moving averages and a negative three-week trend, investors should exercise caution in the near term. Defensive sectors such as utilities are likely to attract interest amid volatility, while cyclical and IT stocks may face continued pressure until clearer global cues emerge.

Upcoming quarterly earnings will be critical in shaping market direction. Stocks with strong fundamentals and resilient earnings growth could outperform, while those facing sectoral headwinds may see further corrections. Market breadth suggests selective stock picking remains essential, as broad-based selling persists.

Overall, the market environment remains challenging, with mixed sectoral performances and subdued institutional activity. Investors should monitor technical levels closely and remain alert to global developments that could influence domestic sentiment.
