Sensex Dips 0.8% Amid Broad Sector Weakness; IT Sector Leads Losses

Sensex and Nifty Performance Overview

After opening sharply lower by 361.36 points, the Sensex pared some losses but still ended the day down 241.74 points, or 0.8%, at 74,974.48. The index remains 4.57% above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, signalling a fragile recovery phase. The broader Nifty index mirrored this trend, with midcap and smallcap indices also trading in the red. The S&P BSE 250 Midcap Index declined 0.36%, while the S&P BSE 250 Smallcap Index slipped 0.16%. The BSE100 index fell 0.62%, indicating pressure across large and mid-sized companies.

The Sensex is currently trading below its 50-day moving average (DMA), which itself is positioned below the 200 DMA, a technical configuration often interpreted as bearish. Over the past three weeks, the Sensex has lost 3.31%, underscoring the recent downward momentum in the market.

Sectoral Trends: IT Sector Bears the Brunt

Out of 20 sectors tracked on the BSE, only six managed to advance, while 14 sectors declined. The Information Technology sector was the worst performer, falling 2.40%, dragged down by heavyweight stocks such as Coforge and HCL Technologies. Coforge was the top loser among both large and midcap stocks, plunging 5.63%, while HCL Technologies declined 3.17%. This sharp correction in IT stocks reflects concerns over margin pressures and global demand uncertainties.

Conversely, the S&P Industrial sector was the top gainer, rising 0.24%, supported by select stocks in the manufacturing and infrastructure space. However, the modest gain in this sector was insufficient to offset the broader market weakness.

Top Gainers and Losers Across Market Caps

Among large caps, Max Healthcare emerged as the top gainer, appreciating 2.34%, buoyed by positive sentiment around healthcare services. In the midcap space, One 97 gained 1.92%, while Graphite India led the smallcap segment with a robust 6.88% rally, driven by strong operational performance and favourable commodity prices.

On the downside, Coforge’s steep 5.63% decline was the most notable across both large and midcap categories. Among small caps, Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals (GNFC) fell 4.69%, reflecting sector-specific headwinds.

Market Breadth and Trading Activity

The advance-decline ratio across the BSE500 index was weak at 0.46x, with 156 stocks advancing against 341 declining. This lopsided breadth indicates a cautious market mood with selling pressure dominating. Small caps traded largely flat, showing limited enthusiasm from retail investors.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) activity data for the day was not explicitly disclosed, but the overall market trend suggests subdued buying interest from both categories amid global uncertainties and domestic macroeconomic concerns.

Global Cues and Their Impact

Global markets remained subdued amid mixed economic data and persistent geopolitical tensions. Asian indices closed mostly lower, while US futures indicated a cautious start to the session. The cautious global environment has weighed on investor sentiment in India, limiting upside potential despite pockets of sectoral strength.

Upcoming Corporate Earnings to Watch

Investor focus is gradually shifting towards the upcoming earnings season, with Lalithaa Jewels and Horizon Industries scheduled to announce results on 11 September 2026. These results will be closely monitored for cues on demand trends and margin pressures in their respective sectors.

Technical Outlook and Market Sentiment

Technically, the Sensex’s failure to hold above the 50 DMA and the negative crossover with the 200 DMA suggests a cautious near-term outlook. The 3.31% decline over the last three weeks highlights the need for investors to remain selective and focus on quality stocks with strong fundamentals.

Small caps, which have been trading flat today, may continue to face headwinds until broader market confidence improves. The subdued advance-decline ratio further emphasises the lack of broad-based buying interest.

Investor Takeaway

With the Sensex down nearly 0.8% and key sectors like IT under pressure, investors should exercise caution in the near term. The market’s technical setup and weak breadth suggest that selective stock picking remains crucial. Healthcare and industrial sectors showed relative resilience, offering potential pockets of opportunity.

Upcoming earnings announcements will be critical in shaping market direction over the next fortnight. Investors should closely monitor corporate results and global developments to recalibrate their portfolios accordingly.
